In Loving Memory

Carl McCutcheon

Carl Dean McCutcheon, age 68, died of complications related to COVID-19 on January 28, 2021 in Houston, TX. Born September 6, 1952 to Jesse and Ward McCutcheon, he was raised in Tulsa, OK and attended Tulsa University where he studied marketing and management. Carl later earned an MBA from Harvard University and a Masters in Accounting from Northwestern University.

After completing his graduate studies, Carl returned to Tulsa to live closer to his family and to embark on a career with Enrst & Young, The Williams Companies, and Terra Industries. He moved to Houston, TX in 1995 to work for Enron and was subsequently employed by Koch Industries and CheMatch, a trading platform for the chemical industry. Carl then struck out on his own by acquiring a majority stake in the geophysical firm AMM Operating and becoming its CEO. This experience sparked a passion for entrepreneurship that launched Carl on a new path. A self-described “serial entrepreneur,” he dedicated the rest of his career to founding and growing early-stage companies in the energy, life sciences and technology sectors, with his final chapter devoted to the recruitment of executives for the oil and gas industry. Highly respected in Houston’s business community, Carl served on numerous boards of directors and was known for his ingenuity, kindness, and endless optimism. He was incredibly generous with his time and talents, and served as a mentor to many.

Carl loved going on early-morning walks at Memorial Park, preparing gourmet meals to share with friends and family, listening to live jazz, venturing on lengthy road trips, engaging in lively political debates and, most of all, making special memories with his two daughters. He was best loved for his giving nature, dry humor, quick wit and sense of adventure.

Carl is survived by his two daughters, Catherine and Caroline; former spouse of thirty-three years, Theresa; two brothers, Joe and Richard; niece Erica, nephews Michael, Neal and Justin; and many extended family members. He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.
